How to keep your argument from being the one that leads to divorce

It is a good idea to stop viewing an argument as a contest that you have to win. Instead, you should “be able to view an issue as one that you are jointly solving” because doing so “creates feelings of connection and teamwork,” says San Antonio couples therapist Amy Kipp.

It is also a good idea to make it known to your spouse that you acknowledge his or her feelings, even if you don’t necessarily agree or empathize with them. Williamsburg, Virginia marriage therapist Amanda Deverich said, “Validating your spouse’s feelings doesn’t mean giving up your own truth, it just helps you reach a compromise.”

“Let’s say you were supposed to look after the kids when you came back from work. If your spouse remembers you saying you’d be home by 6 p.m. but you don’t recall saying that, you could validate it by saying, ‘I can see why you’d be frustrated if you thought that, given how many times I’ve been late in the past,” Deverich added.

Divorce and Annulment in North Carolina

If you and your partner have entered into a marriage that could be considered non-legal or voidable, either you or your partner can request an annulment, which would make the marriage null and void as if it never happened in the first place. This type of separation is not a divorce; if two people divorce, the state still acknowledges that a marriage happened between them.

To be granted an absolute divorce, either the person filing for it or the spouse of the petitioner must have lived for at least six months in the state of North Carolina prior to the filing date. The divorce petition must be filed in the county where the spouse resides if the petitioner is not from North Carolina.

The decision to go your separate ways can be complicated and emotional. Ten marriages and fewer divorces later, New York woman faces felonies

Thirty-nine-year-old Bronx resident Liana Barrientos is facing felony charges and possible jail time after authorities found out she tied the knot 10 times in 11 years, and may have been married to up to eight men at once between the years 1999 and 2010, TIME reported on April 10.

Among the charges Barrientos faces are two felony counts of offering a false instrument for filing and filing a false marriage application and license. If found guilty, Barrientos could face up to four years in prison.

According to prosecutors, she currently has four spouses. Reports indicate that Barrientos plans to plead not guilty to the charges brought against her.

Nicholas Sparks’ wife purchased $1.1M home after split announced

The wife of 49-year-old American novelist, screenwriter, and producer Nicholas Charles Sparks – Cathy Sparks – was reported by entertainment news network TMZ to have moved out of their old home and purchased a new $1.1 million mansion in New Bern, North Carolina in December 2014.

Cathy Sparks’ new residence has 4 acres of lakefront property and is just a couple of miles away from where she used to live with her husband and five children.

TMZ also noted that even though the couple was reportedly separating, plans of the divorce have yet to be divulged by the couple; as a matter of fact, divorce papers have yet to be filed. They have been married for the past 25 years.

Angie Harmon and Jason Sehorn to divorce

After being married to each other for 13 long years, 42-year-old Hollywood television and film actress Angie Harmon and 43-year-old former cornerback for the National Football League Jason Heath Sehorn announced on November 3 that they have reached an “amicable separation,” BreatheCast reported.

Because of their conflicting work schedules across the country, their relationship was put under strain for a long time. As a family, they lived in North Carolina, but Harmon’s film schedule in L.A. called for her to spend months away from home. This, sources said, contributed heavily to their decision to separate. Sehorn proposed to Harmon in 1998 on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and they married three years later in 2001.

The couple has three children together: 11-year-old Finley, nine-year-old Avery, and five-year-old Emery, who will likely figure in a child custody arrangement.
