Does farming lower the rate of divorce?

According to sociological statistics, before the Farm Crisis of the 1980’s, the divorce rate among American couples who work in the farming industry was lower than the divorce rate among other American couples. This fact is an exemplary feat, considering around 40% of American marriages end in divorce.

Data from the National Vital Statistics System showed the divorce rate of people in states where agriculture is a major industry decreased over the past 25 years. Iowa had the lowest divorce rate (1.5 divorces per 1,000 married couples) and Nevada had the highest divorce rate (5.3 divorces per 1,000 married couples) in the year 2014. In the same year, the average divorce rate for 46 states and the District of Columbia was 3.3 per 1,000 married couples, lower compared to 5.0 in 1990.

A divorce is a particularly difficult time for both the separating couple and the people around them, especially their children, family members, and friends.
