Grandmother shoots herself in the foot after losing custody fight

North Carolina grandmother Sheila Marie Nougier, 42, who lost custody of her two-year-old grandchild, opened fire in a Walmart parking lot last October 22 at approximately 3 p.m.

According to a report from Fox 8, a judge turned over custody of the child from Nougier to the child’s father earlier that day. The father then went to meet Nougier in the parking lot of a nearby Walmart when Nougier indiscriminately fired her gun, shooting herself in the foot in the process. Nougier was charged with one count of injury to personal property, one count of discharging a firearm within the city limits, two counts of attempted first-degree murder, and two counts of assault by pointing a gun.

Durham judge scolded for actions during custody hearing

The North Carolina Supreme Court has issued a public reprimand against Durham district court Judge James Hill on Friday, November 6 over his actions during a contentious child custody hearing over which he presided in 2014. The reprimand specifically addresses his wording when he told the parents involved in the case that they were “acting like idiots.”

Hill, who has served as a Durham judge since 2002, was given a public scolding for expressing inappropriate comments, misusing his contempt powers, and “exhibiting a failure to remain patient, dignified, and courteous, to the parties appearing before him” during the court proceedings.

Fathers prefer supplying non-monetary support – study

According to an article by The Street on July 6, many fathers prefer to give children the things they need directly rather than simply make child support payments.

A study led by Baltimore, Maryland-based Johns Hopkins University that looked into the lives of 367 low-income non-custodial fathers in the cities of Austin, Charleston, and Philadelphia recently indicated that almost half of the respondents (46%) gave material support to their children, such as baby products, food, clothing, school supplies, and the like.

Many prefer non-monetary support so they can be more directly involved in their children’s lives.

Child custody and child support arrangements are critically important to establish, as these agreements will affect you and your children’s lives for years to come. If you need help enforcing child support payments, modifying agreements, or something else related to divorce law, the experienced legal team at Marshall & Taylor PLLC may be able to help. Father of Fantasia Barrino’s baby filed for custody

Thirty-year-old R&B singer Fantasia Barrino’s ex-boyfriend, Brandel Shouse, recently filed for full custody of their 13-year-old daughter Zion, according to a report from one of the celebrity’s representatives.

The child custody, visitation, and child support lawsuit was filed in Mecklenburg, North Carolina. The statement said that Shouse has had limited contact with Zion over the past 13 years, and Barrino has been solely responsible for providing her financial support. Barrino said that she expects the case, which will be heard in 2015, to go smoothly, as it should be immediately clear what is in Zion’s best interest.

In addition to addressing the case brought against her, Barrino thanked her fans for their support, especially those single mothers who understand what she has been through.

Custody dispute ends, great-uncle adopts toddler

A custody battle involving the foster parents and extended biological relatives of a 2 1/2-year-old girl has ended, and her great-uncle will adopt her, The Wichita Eagle reported on July 13.

Sedgwick County juvenile court Judge Robb Rumsey ruled in January that the toddler could not live with her great-grandmother in South Carolina as an adopted daughter because of her limited finances and her age. Despite her foster parents seeking custody, it was favored in court that the girl should live with her great-uncle and older sisters in North Carolina. The great-uncle adopted the little girl’s three older sisters in July 2013 after a home study and the approval of Kansas and North Carolina officials.
