McDowell County police deputies in North Carolina have arrested and charged 33-year-old Old Fort resident Tia Chappell with bigamy and perjury on Monday, September 8.

Chappell swore to court officials on June 1 that it was her first time to marry, however, investigators were able to glean information that she had been married twice before, once to a man in Cabarrus County on Sept. 25, 2000 and then afterwards to another man on Sept. 17, 2010 in the same county.

Chappell had never been divorced. She was married to a third man in July. The McDowell County Register of Deeds notified the sheriff’s office of Chappell’s offense last month.
